Conference Announcement
The School Safety Advocacy Council is pleased to announce
its partnership with the National Law Enforcement & Corrections
Technology Center for School Safety Excellence, which is funded
by the U.S. Department of Justice, for the 2009 National School
Safety Conference. This conference will be held in Orlando,
FL. July 27-31, 2009 at the Buena Vista Palace and Resort,
an official Disney Resort Hotel. This annual partnership is
aimed at providing cutting edge training in school safety and
its newest technologies to law enforcement, school administration,
school security or anyone that is responsible for school safety
or emergency response. The educational content of this conference
is currently being finalized but nationally and internationally
known speakers are planned to present:
In addition to the unprecedented educational opportunities
the U. S. National Institute of Justice will officially unveil
A.S.T.R.O, an active school shooter virtual training tool.
This will be the first time this training will be available
and will be held in a state of the art computer laboratory
set up solely for use by conference attendees. Conference attendees
can also attend virtual training in Incident
Commander, where
they can respond virtually to an emergency management incident
at a school. Conference attendees can also participate in School
Safety Plan Generator where they will be able to build an emergency
response plan for their actual school or district. Attendees
can also train in a virtual School
Vulnerability Program which
can be customized to their school. All conference attendees
will receive free copies of these programs to return to their

showcase in the exhibit hall that will be the premiere school

representatives from the federal government, state and local
police and school districts, as well as international school
safety and law enforcement personnel. This showcase will include
a U.S. government Partnership Row which will display products
and services from federal agencies and the organizations that
work with them showcasing products on school safety, with many
of them being free to attendees. Exhibiting space will also

James T. Reese, Ph.D. – Award
winning Author and Lecturer:

Dr. Scott Poland, Professor Nova Southeastern
University
Scott Poland is the former president of the National
Association of School Psychologists and current member
of the (NASP) Emergency Response team. He led the National
Organization for Victim Assistance team that responded
to the school shootings in West Paducah, Ken., Jonesboro,
Ark. and provided onsite assistance to schools in Littleton,
Co. after the shooting at Columbine High School.

Don Alwes, is a trainer and consultant with
24 years of law enforcement experience.
He is a lead instructor for the National Tactical Officers
Association in the areas of school and workplace violence
and active shooter response. For 15 years, Don has
served as an adjunct instructor for Kentucky's Department
of Criminal Justice Training. He has instructed law
enforcement personnel in active shooter response/rapid
deployment, terrorism, homeland security, school and
workplace violence, firearms, tactics, vulnerability
assessment, and executive development.

Pennsylvania
State Police
Lieutenant Allen Krawczel and Corporal Mark Magyar
of the Pennsylvania State Police will provide a detailed
look into the October 6, 2006, tragic shooting at
a one room Amish Schoolhouse in South Central Pennsylvania.
Major points will be made utilizing actual audio
and video from the police response as well as crime
scene photos. Lessons learned from this tragedy will
be able to be applied to any police or school response
to a critical incident. |
